Hi,
I'm using one of the categories on my site to store posts that are used for a blog. The snag is that when I add a post to the blog category (doesn't include a thumbnail picture - just text) the recent thumbnails list on my homepage updates with an empty thumbnail, which looks a bit ugly. Is there a way to exclude this category from ones that is queried to make the list?

Did you see this post about hiding specific categories? I used it to hide the tag "recent" from my sidebar nav.
You may be able to use this technique to tweak what is displayed your "Recent" thumbnails...
Hope this solution isn't totally unrelated to your issue. I'm just stumbling around here myself!

to...
<div class="photos grid_12 alpha omega">
<?php $the_query = new WP_Query ('cat=-18,-' . get_option('fotofolio_testimonial') . '&posts_per_page=6'); ?>
allowed me to omit categoryID 18 from the search.
